From line items to the big picture. Seeing the forest through the trees.
Careful tax preparation, year-round tax planning, and clear accounting for business owners, practice owners, families, and retirees, delivered with precision and without the rush.
The Challenge
Tax season shouldn't be the only time anyone looks at your numbers.
You've built something worth protecting: a business, a practice, a career, a family. Yet for most owners, tax is a scramble in March, a number nobody saw coming, and books that only get caught up when a return is due.
By the time a return is prepared, nearly every meaningful decision has already been made. You deserve a CPA who knows your numbers all year, explains them in plain language, and treats your return as the final chapter of a plan, not a surprise ending.
Slow down, and the numbers start to speak
When your books are current and your tax picture is reviewed before year-end instead of after it, surprises turn into choices. The return becomes a confirmation rather than a reveal, and every decision is made on your own terms.
Beyond the ledger. Beyond the trees.
Seeing your complete financial landscape.
Precision, not guesswork
Returns reviewed line by line and books reconciled with care. You know what you owe, why you owe it, and what can still change.
All year, not once a year
Planning happens while there is still time to act: before estimates are due, before year-end, and before the return is filed.
Room to breathe
An unhurried partnership that brings calm to tax season. We carry the details so you can give your attention to your family and your work.
We believe that exceptional tax and accounting work requires two distinct vantage points: microscopic accuracy and macroscopic vision.
It is not enough to simply log transactions or reactively file returns at the deadline. True financial peace of mind comes when your records are flawless and your strategy is forward-looking. We treat accounting not as a historic scoreboard, but as a map of the terrain. By clearing away the administrative underbrush and structuring immaculate financial records, we empower you to zoom out, see the forest through the trees, and move toward your long-term horizon with total confidence.

Your CPA
We begin with your story, not just your return.
Mary Dovel, CPA, PFS · Founder
- Certified Public Accountant
- Personal Financial Specialist (PFS)
- AICPA PFP Executive Committee
Mary has more than a decade of experience in high-net-worth tax, preparing returns and advising individuals, families, and business owners across S-corporations, partnerships, and trusts. She's seen how much a rushed, once-a-year approach costs people, and she founded Steadfast Horizon to offer something quieter and more intentional: tax and accounting work done with care, by someone who knows your whole story.
She holds the Personal Financial Specialist (PFS) credential and serves on the AICPA Personal Financial Planning (PFP) Executive Committee, so she reads every return with the bigger picture of your life in view. Her approach is unhurried by design: every number checked, every decision explained, and every filing made with your long-term goals in mind.
"We do not rush the process. We listen, we reconcile, and we build. Numbers kept with care become a foundation you can stand on."
Mary's faith is central to how she serves. A member of Good Shepherd Church in Charlotte, she also volunteers with Bright Side Youth Ranch, a nonprofit that uses equine therapy to help children overcome trauma and build resilience, a reflection of her belief that the best work is rooted in service to others.

Common Questions
Before we begin the conversation
Who does Steadfast Horizon Tax Advisory serve?
We serve business owners, professionals who own their practices, families across multiple generations, and retirees. Many clients come to us because their tax work has only ever happened in March, their books are caught up once a year, and no one has walked them through what the numbers mean. We bring careful preparation, year-round planning, and clear accounting together in one unhurried relationship.
What services do you offer?
We prepare individual, family, business, and trust tax returns; provide year-round tax planning; and handle accounting and bookkeeping for businesses and practices. Each piece is coordinated with the others, so your books, your planning, and your returns tell the same story.
What is the difference between tax preparation and tax planning?
Tax preparation reports what already happened: it turns last year's records into an accurate return. Tax planning shapes what happens next: it looks at decisions still ahead, such as owner compensation, estimated payments, retirement plan contributions, and the timing of income and deductions, while there is still time to act. The two work best together, and we provide both.
Do you work with small business owners and practice owners?
Yes. Business owners are at the heart of our practice, including doctors, physical therapists, and other professionals who own their own practices. Mary has spent more than a decade preparing and planning for owners of S-corporations and partnerships, and we keep your business return and your personal return in step with each other.
Do you work with retirees?
Yes. Retirement brings its own set of tax decisions: when to take required minimum distributions, whether a Roth conversion makes sense in a given year, how charitable giving from an IRA is reported, and how Social Security is taxed. We prepare your return and help you understand the tax impact of each choice before you make it.
Do you work with clients virtually or only in Charlotte?
We are based in Charlotte, North Carolina and work with clients both locally and virtually across the United States.
How do I share my documents securely?
Clients upload documents and message us through a secure client portal, available from the Client Login link on this site. Please do not send tax documents by regular email.
